As of May 2023, they are aiming to start construction by 2025. In 2021, SCDOT revived the 526 extension project. Ĭiting Charleston County's inability to provide funds to cover the project's increased cost, the State Transportation Infrastructure Bank (SIB) board voted on May 26, 2016, to abandon the proposed extension of I-526 across James and Johns Islands. Some alternatives shown include the possibility that it will be built in expressway grade instead, falling short of being labeled an Interstate Highway. Various alternative routings and options are being reviewed, but the general plan is to extend south from US 17 to Johns Island and then east to James Island, where it will connect with SC 30 (possibly renumbering it). The proposed missing section of I-526 was the subject of an environmental study that was completed in early 2014. The route was studied as a toll road in the 1960s, but it was determined that there was not sufficient traffic demand to fund the route and the bridge entirely by tolls. It opened on September 4, 1993, and provided a route off the island that did not require crossing a drawbridge. The current route was proposed as early as the 1960s to provide a second and more direct connection between James Island and downtown Charleston. In 1956, this became part of an extended SC 49. SC 30 was reused in 1935 as a renumbering of SC 15 from US 221 in Watts Mills to SC 92 near Cross Anchor. The remainder became part of US 401 in 1933. In 1927, it was truncated to Walterboro, as parts were transferred to US 17 and SC 28 (this segment is now part of US 21). In 1926, SC 39 was extended north with SC 4 from Santee to Summerton on a new route to Sumter, replaced SC 42 north to Bishopville, east with SC 34 to Lydia, then replaced SC 351 north to Hartsville, then northeast on a new route through Society Hill to Bennettsville, then replaced SC 38 northeast to the North Carolina state line at McColl. Mileage markers and exit numbers on both SC 30 and I-526 are based on an eventual merging of the routes: with miles 1 to 3 occurring on SC 30 and miles 10 to 30 used on the current I-526 route. Approximately seven miles (11 km) separate the eastern terminus of SC 30 from the eastern terminus of I-526's current extent. The route is an orphaned segment of Interstate 526 (I-526). Exit 2 has access to Harbor View Road and exit 1 is for the Herbert U. From there, the highway runs northeast, and has two interchanges south of the Ashley River crossing. The interchange consists of a half- diamond interchange. SC 30 begins at SC 171 on James Island at exit 3. The freeway travels from SC 171 on James Island to U.S. South Carolina Highway 30 ( SC 30, also known as the James Island Expressway or the James Island Connector) is a 3.050-mile-long (4.908 km) freeway in Charleston, South Carolina.

The primary source of blue diamonds is the Cullinan mine in South Africa, majority-owned by Petra Diamonds. Stones in private collections or on display in museums, usually, are by themselves, letting their beauty of the stone speak for itself. Older stones have passed through many hands, even at times being incorporated into family jewels of different royal families. Another variation in the designs the diamonds may take is whether or not they’ve been incorporated into jewelry, such as the Blue Heart which at one point was the center stone of a ring. Many, such as the Imperial Blue and the Winston Blue, are pear-shaped however, some like the Hope Diamond are oval. The Natural Color Diamond Association recently reported that prices for natural blue diamonds have gradually and consistently increased 12-17% every year over the past decade, regardless of the hue.Īs far as designs go, the shapes the diamonds take can vary. But don’t despair! It is possible to get lesser type blue diamonds for a relatively lower price, and though they’re not the truest blue of a fancy vivid, they are still beautiful stones! And lucky for you they won’t hold nearly the jaw-dropping price tag that comes with a flawless Fancy Vivid.īlue diamonds have been a remarkable investment for collectors over the years. Unless you happen to have millions of dollars lying around, chances are you won’t be able to purchase your own vivid blue. The sales themselves generated a flurry of media attention around the globe and much public discussion, which has further energized the market for these incredibly beautiful and coveted gemstones. In fact, two high-profile blue diamonds have recently been sold at auction. As a result, we are now seeing diamonds sold at public auctions after being held untraded for many years. The escalation of price for blue diamonds over the last several decades has motivated owners to seek sale opportunities. Some Type Ia blue stones have been found, but these stones are often a greyish blue, or sometimes a pale greenish hue. Less than one-tenth of a percent of all fancy colored diamonds are Type IIb blues. Most blue diamonds are Type IIb, meaning they have no nitrogen impurities and there fore show a pure blue color without any secondary yellowing influence. They are second in rarity only to red diamonds, of which there are only around 100 known recorded stones in the world. Fancy Vivid stones are described as medium to dark in tone and strong to very strong in color saturation. Of this tiny fraction, only about 1% are classified as Fancy Vivid, helping to explain the Oppenheimer’s almost unfathomable price tag when it recently sold at auction. So how rare is “rare”? Well, blue diamonds comprise only around 0.0001% of the world’s diamond supply. Boron also is also present in higher quantities closer to the surface of the Earth whereas diamonds are formed deep in the Earth’s mantle where boron is exceedingly rare to find. On Earth, boron is much less abundant than elements like nitrogen, which is what’s responsible for the yellow hue in other diamonds. What Is a Blue Diamond?īlue diamonds are created by the presence of boron, a metalloid chemical element that introduces itself to the crystal lattice structure during the diamond’s growth. They are so rare that according to the Natural Color Diamond Association, there is only one natural blue diamond on the market for every 100 Picasso paintings up at auction. Because of their beautiful color and scarcity, they’ve become a marvel at auction and can come with some pretty heavy price tags. Blue diamonds are incredibly rare stones, and each is unique in terms of hue, clarity, carat weight and value. The departures of the eight schools will all be effective July 1, 2024, as the Pac-12’s current TV contract expires. In the wake of those moves, Arizona, Arizona State and Utah left for the Big 12, joining Colorado, which had made the jump a few weeks ago. First, Oregon and Washington left for the Big Ten, following in the footsteps of Southern California and UCLA a year prior. In a series of moves on a day of wild, fast-moving news, the Pac-12 broke apart. Conference realignment-perhaps better called conference consolidation, in this situation-shook the landscape of college sports. Last Friday, a storm brewing for much of the summer came to a head. So I think it’s a problem in the sense that if you’re going to tell people they can’t place a baseball bet or use DraftKings or Prize Picks or whatever, that’s a little ridiculous.Oregon coach Mark Wasikowski (Photo courtesy of Oregon) On sports betting problems in the NCAA: I think the rules in these sports just haven’t caught up to the reality of how people live their lives and how fans, both athletes and non-athletes, enjoy sports. So the money gap’s going to continue to get bigger and bigger. If we’re talking about there being a lack of suitors for the Pac 12, what does that mean for the rest of them? It means that there’s still not any suitors for them, either. They still don’t have the distribution that the main conferences have. The expanded playoffs are gonna allow a little more access to some Group of Five teams, but they still don’t have those TV deals. The financial disparity between the Power Five and the Group of Five is just so big … and it’s only gonna grow. On whether the Power Five will break away from the NCAA: It’s kind of already happened. And then what happens to the Mountain West? Do you combine with the Sun Belt? I don’t know the answer to that. That could mean the Mountain West just gives all of their teams to the Pac-12. If we’re creating pie-in-the-sky scenarios, let’s just say the Pac-12 loses the two Arizona schools or Colorado and Utah, and then Oregon and Washington. On a conference facing termination: I think it’s possible for maybe the Mountain West, although I doubt it. If you’re the SEC, why do you add an average-to-slightly-above-average team program if it doesn’t help you? … If the SEC wants to go get Oregon and Washington, which might be two huge fish, is that even worth it to go across the country and get those two teams? Probably not. For the SEC, I guess it matters a little bit because traditionally, you want Southern football to be Southern football, and partly because there’s nobody else out there worth getting. I think it does matter to the ACC at least for now, partly because they’re locked into their deal. On whether geography matters to conferences: Obviously, it doesn’t matter to the Big Ten at all. Then you’re gonna see the Pac 12 make some moves the Mountain West probably make some moves. … If the Pac-12 media rights deals fall apart or just aren’t very attractive to some schools that might be willing to leave or want to leave, then the Big 12 might start making some moves. I think that has opened the door for other conferences to go fishing. The Pac-12’s a big-time mess right now, due in large part to Larry Scott, the former commissioner who really sent this whole thing into a spiral 10 years ago. Sallee on impending conference realignment: We’re gonna see a lot of movement since the Pac-12 media rights deal is sort of all over the place - we’ve seen Apple kinda go away, we’ve seen the CW kind of go. To him, just as a worker is a member of a place of work and gives up of some of his/her freedoms to gain money, a subject, who is a member of a state, gives up a piece of his/her freedom to gain the benefits of living within a human community. 10 Furthermore, Weber claims that the belief in the legitimacy of the state is akin to how a worker, who is a member of a workplace, acquiesces to the rules of his/her employer to receive the right of payment. 9 Hence, as a source that is customarily accepted, the state can maintain a person’s feelings of loyalty, and it can fulfill the desires of its members, which Weber believes legitimates it because it alone is independent of politics, or the struggle for a piece of the state’s legitimate power. 8Īlso, Weber claims that obeying the state is a result of, but not solely due to, people’s habit to do so, their affection for the state, and for the intricate interests that they may gain from obedience to it. 7 Hence, because one may gain what they view to be an advantage by obeying the state, it follows that they recognize the state as legitimate since they accept it as the source of command and power that can grant them the advantages they seek to obtain. 6 Weber seems to support this claim when he states that those who have ulterior motives, or intentions for personal gain, have an interest in obeying the state since it is the source that can grant them their wants. 5īy using knowledge and not just physical force to assert power, as reasoned by Foucault, the state positions itself to perpetuate and increase control over its people through the process of normalization.įurthermore, because personal interests play a role in sustaining obedience within the state, one may claim that there is a purposive element to being obedient. How do states accomplish the task of ensuring that its people will obey its decrees? Weber states that people submit to the authority of the state because of factors that range from simple habit to very specific desires for advantage. 4 In other words, a state’s legitimacy depends on the probability that those within in it will, in theory, abide by all of its commands. Weber claims that the state’s legitimacy rests on the chance that people will follow its commands as a given source of power. Lastly, I will argue that the power the state has, through the use of institutions, to employ and perpetuate knowledge as a means of coercion, can be understood to be another essential piece in defining the concept of the state, which I believe Weber’s “Politics as a Vocation” seems to miss. Next, by drawing from the works of Foucault I will suggest that there are other forms of power that states' use to assert their authority. This paper will first describe Weber’s views on legitimacy, his definitions of the state, and the forms of legitimation which he claims justifies his definitions. 2 But, should one only support Weber’s claims despite the fact that states also employ knowledge as a means to preserve their power? 3 1 He also claims that one can define the state as being a human community where people struggle with one another for what is ultimately a greater share of the power to apply legitimate force. In his “Politics as a Vocation,” Weber claims that one of the definitions of the state is its ability to employ legitimate violence as a means of control in a given territory. As a founder of sociology, Max Weber influenced the social sciences immensely.
